Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza

Xinhua, August 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Egypt on Monday reopened Rafah crossing point on its borders with the Gaza Strip.

The Hamas-run borders and crossings corporation said in an emailed statement that Egypt reopened Rafah crossing point in two directions for four days, from Monday to Thursday.

The corporation, which belongs to the Gaza ministry of interior, said that passage through the crossing will be according to lists of names of people who had already registered and requested to travel through the crossing.

"The priority of travelling through the crossing point will be for patients who need urgent medical treatment and then students who study abroad and Palestinians who hold dual citizenships," said the statement.

Egypt, which last opened the crossing, for three days, on July 26, has conditioned a permanent opening on an end to the internal Palestinian split between Hamas and President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party.

The crossing has been open for a total of only 15 days since the beginning of this year. Endit
