Passenger bus overturns, killing 12 in northwest Cambodia: police chief

Xinhua, August 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 12 Cambodians were killed outright and 24 others were injured when a passenger bus overturned on Thursday in northwest Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province near the border with Thailand.

The accident happened at 11:30 am local time in Anlong Veng district when the speeding bus drove downhill and overturned into a dry valley, said Men Ly, police chief of Oddar Meanchey province. "Twelve people, 11 of them are females, were confirmed dead at the scene, while 24 others, 22 of them are females, sustained either light or serious injuries,"he told Xinhua over telephone, adding that most passengers are old people, who returned from joining a Buddhist ceremony at a pagoda in the area.

Men Ly said the injured people had been sent to hospitals soon after the accident. "That point is a dangerous place, where accidents have often occurred when cars drive downhill carelessly,"he said, blaming the carelessness of driver for the tragic accident.

Road accidents has become the No. 1 killer in Cambodia. Last year, the accidents had claimed 2,148 lives in Cambodia, costing the country about 337 million U.S. dollars, according to the Ministry of Interior. Endi
