Uganda' s Gazelles beat America' s visiting Westmont College Warriors

Uganda' s women' s Basketball team, Gazelles on Monday night beat visiting US side Westmont College Warriors in an International friendly played at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.

The hosts won the closely contested game 56-50 with former MVP in Uganda' s Basketball League Maureen Amoding scoring a game-high 11 points.

Martha Soigi who was dropped on Uganda' s team taking part in the on-going Netball World Cup in Australia together with Flavia Oketcho and Muhaimuna Namuwaya scored 9 points each.

The Uganda Gazelles won two of the quarters 13-11, 17-10, but lost out in the fourth quarter 14-17 after they had tied 12-12 in the first quarter. Senior player Kristin Karr was in good form scoring 15 points, while Aysia Shellmire picked 12 points.

Mavita Ali, the Gazelles assistant coach said the build-up was very important as they prepare the team ahead of the 2015 All Africa Games to take place on Congo Brazzaville next month.

The Westmont College Warriors coach Kirsten Moore said they were happy to play a very competitive team. "They played better offensive basketball than us," added the coach.

Besides the match, the visiting American team is also in Uganda to reach out to kids through the Sports Outreach Institute. Endi
