Pakistan summons Indian envoy over cross-border shelling

Xinhua, August 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistan on Tuesday summoned a senior Indian diplomat to the Foreign Office and a protest was lodged over a recent cross-border shelling that killed a woman, Pakistan's foreign ministry said.

The military earlier said that a 28-years-old women surnamed Fareeda, who was shot in her belly by Indian troops at Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region last week, died on Tuesday of wounds.

"The Indian Deputy High Commissioner was called in the Foreign Office to lodge a protest with the Government of India over the killing of Ms. Fareeda, resident of village Nadheri, District Kotli," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003 and guns had been relatively silent along the LoC, however, both sides occasionally exchange fire. An escalation had been seen in recent weeks.

"Pakistan also condemned the latest unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian security forces at the LoC in Nakial sector near Kotli and Bhimber Gali sector (in Kashmir) on 9 August, in which Pakistani posts were targeted," the statement said.

Indian security forces have committed 37 and 24 unprovoked cease fire violations on the LoC and the Working Boundary in July and August respectively, according to the Foreign Ministry.

"The Government of Pakistan expressed its deep concern at the continuous unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian side at the LoC and the Working Boundary and urged India to stop forthwith the ceasefire violations and observe the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding to create peace and tranquillity at the LoC and the Working Boundary," it said.

On its part, India also claims that Pakistan violated the ceasefire agreement that cause casualties on the Indian side.

Top security advisers of the two countries are scheduled to meet in New Delhi later this month who will discuss anti-terror measures and how to reduce tensions along the LoC.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, had met at Ufa, Russia, last month and agreed on the meeting of the national security advisers. Endi
