Myanmar's northern town set to move out due to destruction by landslide

Xinhua, August 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Hakha town, the capital of Chin state in Myanmar's remote northern area, will be relocated due to destruction by landslides, local media reported on Tuesday.

Landslides triggered by heavy rainfall have destroyed five of the town's six wards since June, the local 7-Day News reported, adding that experts are seeking safer places for local residents to move out from Hakha.

About 400 households, or 10 percent of the total in the town, will be initially evacuated as almost all roads linking Hakha have been damaged.

Some places in Hakha have been designated as "danger zones", the report said.

The heavy storm since June has destroyed 21 bridges and 81 hectares of farmland in Chin state, according to the state government.

A total of eight relief camps have been set up to accommodate 7, 678 victims.

The landslide in Chin state also claimed four lives and destroyed 1,119 houses. Endi
