Israeli man stabbed near Jerusalem, one Palestinian attacker shot dead

Xinhua, August 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli soldiers after he and a few other Palestinians stabbed an Israeli man in an attack at a gas station near Jerusalem Sunday, local media reported.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that three to four Palestinians attacked an Israeli civilian at a gas station on Route 443 leading to Jerusalem through the West Bank.

The Israeli man suffered light injuries and received medical care at the scene and was then evacuated to a hospital.

The IDF also stated that Israeli forces nearby "responded with gunfire against one of the suspects in order to prevent their escape" and that "a hit was confirmed," without giving further details on the suspect's status.

However, several Israeli media outlets reported that the suspect was killed on the spot.

A Ynet news website report said the military is searching for additional suspects who participated in the attack.

Three Israeli soldiers were injured in a vehicular attack Thursday by a Palestinian on route 60 in the West Bank near the Sinjil junction, 20 km northeast of Ramallah. Two of them suffered serious injuries and are still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Two Israelis were injured, one moderately and the other lightly, during a firebomb attack on a vehicle traveling in east Jerusalem, in the Beit Hanina neighborhood.

The attacks come a week after an incident on July 31, when two assailants - believed by Israeli authorities to be Jewish extremists - threw firebombs at a Palestinian family's house in the West Bank village of Duma near Nablus.

An 18 month-old baby, Ali Dawabsha, died in the fire that ensued, with his father Sa'ad dying Saturday from his wounds.

The Israeli Defense establishment suspected a backlash of attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, and ordered a crackdown on Jewish extremist terror groups during the investigation of the Duma village arson attack.

As part of the crackdown, the security establishment arrested seven Jewish settlers overnight during a special operation between Saturday and Sunday, and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon authorized the use of administrative detention in this investigation against the Jewish detainees.

Administrative detention is used mainly against Palestinian terror suspects for security reasons, and includes detention for a certain amount of time without a fair trial. Administrative detention is controversial and is rejected by human rights groups in Israel. Endite
