Singapore marks independence Golden Jubilee

Xinhua, August 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

Singapore celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Sunday with the biggest-ever National Day Parade (NDP), which commemorated the city state's independence.

Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong together with foreign guests including Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao, attended the NDP.

With the theme of Onward Singapore, celebrations were launched from the Padang, where the first parade was held in 1966, to the Marina Bay area where large LED screens were located at eight prominent sites to broadcast "live" of NDP, thus thousands more can join the celebration. It's estimated that about 201,000 viewers shared the joy of NDP.

The public can also experienced some spectacular elements, including fighter jets forming "50" formation flypast, the 21-Gun Salute, a display of the combined assets of the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defense Force as well as the biggest fireworks display in the parade's history.
