22 killed in N. Afghan car bombing

Xinhua, August 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

About 22 people were killed in a suicide car bombing in northern Afghanistan's province of Kunduz late on Saturday, an official said on Sunday.

"A total of 19 pro-government militiamen and three civilians died when a militant struck a gathering with a car bomb in Shourab area of Khan Abad district late Saturday evening," district governor, Hayyatullah Amiri, told Xinhua.

A pro-government local leader named Abdul Qadir was among the killed, the official said, adding that some 11 people, including three civilians, were injured by the blast.

The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since mid-April when the militant group launched a yearly rebel offensive against Afghan security forces.

The Taliban urged civilians to stay away from official gatherings, military convoys and centers, which were regarded as legitimate targets by the militants, besides warning people not to support the government.

On Friday, a total of 50 people, including a U.S. soldier of the NATO-led Resolute Support mission, were killed and hundreds wounded in a string of suicide attacks in Afghan capital of Kabul. Endi
