Egypt policeman shot dead by unknown militants

Xinhua, August 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

One policeman was shot dead and three others wounded on Saturday as two unknown militants opened fire at their police vehicle on Fayoum-Cairo highway, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said.

"The security men exchanged fire with the assailants, but they managed to run away," the police statement said, noting the security men were transferring two detainees to Cairo Security Department to be released.

Anti-government armed attacks killed hundreds of police and army men since 2013.

Most of the attacks were claimed by "Sinai State" militant group, a Sinai-based affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) regional militant group.

Crackdown on Morsi's supporters since his ouster left more than 1,000 of them killed and thousands more jailed. Endit
