Convicted Cambodian ex-city governor Chhouk Bandith surrendered himself to police on Saturday after having been on the run for over two years since a court sentenced him to 18 months in jail over shooting protesting garment workers, a senior police officer confirmed. "Chhouk Bandith handed himself to the Phnom Penh Municipal Police this (Saturday) afternoon and we have sent him to the Svay Rieng Provincial Court for legal procedures and punishment,"Chuon Sovann, police chief of the Phnom Penh Municipality, told Xinhua over telephone.
Chhouk Bandith, former governor of eastern Svay Rieng province' s Bavet city, was sentenced by a Cambodian court to 18 months in prison in June 2013 on the charges of unintentionally shooting to injure three garment workers in a protest at a city's special economic zone in February 2012. He was removed from his governor post by Prime Minister Hun Sen three months later.
The former governor's surrender came after Hun Sen called on police to bring him to justice on Monday. "In the case of Chhouk Bandith, if police do not arrest him, the police are wrong," Hun Sen said in speech during a bridge inauguration ceremony in southern Kandal province. Endi
