ASEAN police pledge greater joint efforts to tackle transnational crimes

Xinhua, August 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

Police chiefs from the ten members of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to strengthen joint efforts to fight trans-boundary crimes at the end of their three- day meeting here Thursday.

"There were many agreements that we had put in the joint communique to tackle transnational crimes, including terrorism, cyber crime, maritime fraud and commercial fraud," Indonesian Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti told reports on the sidelines of the closing ceremony.

Transnational crimes cannot be handled solely by a single country. It has to be jointly settled, he said.

"A crime that is committed in Indonesia could be linked to other offenses in Malaysia or Singapore. So we have equal obligation to tackle the crime. We need to improve such cooperation," Badrodin added.

The police delegations also agreed to appoint Indonesia's senior police officer Aius Mulyono to become the executive director of the Aseanapol Secretariat.

It is also decided at the meeting that the 25th Senior Police Officer Course and the 6th Aseanapol Police Cooperation Training will be held in Indonesia in October this year. Endi
