Singapore's Ministry of Defence ( MINDEF) on Thursday commissioned its first-ever time capsule, which will be opened in 2065, as part of its National Day Observance Ceremony and to commemorate the nation's 50th year of independence.
Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen sealed the time capsule. Ng updated his Facebook post, saying "I wonder what Singapore will be like in SG100. I wish our children and theirs the peace and harmony we enjoy today. Singapore, may you grow from strength to strength and continue to bless your people."
The specially fabricated stainless steel time capsule is 40 cm by 150 cm. About 800 items were contributed by MINDEF personnel to the capsule, including a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) 50 commemorative book, 50 high-resolution photographs of MINDEF's present surroundings, notes addressed to future senior MINDEF office holders by their present-day counterparts and SG50/SAF50 memorabilia, MINDEF said in the press release.
Deputy Secretary of Administration at Ministry of Defence Han Neng Hsiu explained they selected meaningful items that would enable future generations to better appreciate the achievements in the first 50 years and the progress that will be made in the next 50 years. Han added that the time capsule reflects the confidence in Singapore's future.
Around 2,500 personnel from MINDEF and SAF recited the National Pledge and sang the National Anthem, led by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, at the National Day Observance Ceremony on Thursday morning to celebrate Singapore's 50th birthday.
After the ceremony, the time capsule will be moved to its exhibition location at level one of the MINDEF building, and it will be opened during Singapore's 100th anniversary in August 2065. Endi
