Train services set to resume amid flood in Myanmar

Train services between Myitkyina in Myanmar's northern Kachin State and Mandalay will resume within a few days as repair work for flood-damaged bridges and railways is nearly completed, according to Ministry of Rail Transportation on Thursday.

The resumption date for the services will be announced soon, the ministry said.

During the construction period, the ministry has been operating a rail service between Myitkyina and Kawlin of Sagaing Region, and between Mandalay and Chatthin, with special trains.

The recent flooding in Kachin State and Sagaing Region destroyed a number of bridges and damaged tracks.

Death toll from the severe flooding across Myanmar has reached at least 69 with nearly 270,000 other people affected so far, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Rakhine state, one of the four declared disaster zones, was by far the worst hit, recording 41 deaths, followed by Mandalay Region with eight, Sagaing Region with seven and Shan State with five, said the ministry.

The four declared disaster zones include Rakhine, Chin, Sagaing and Magway.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation,1,170, 374 acres (474,001 hectares) of farmlands in 13 regions and states in the country were under water, of which Bago Region accounted for over 124,508 hectares. Endi
