Mexican club America hopes to repeat historic win over River Plate in Copa Libertadores

Xinhua, August 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

On the eve of the final game of CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) Copa Bridgestone Libertadores between Mexico's Tigres and Argentina's River Plate, Mexican media recalled that America is the only one Mexican team that has defeated River Plate in the history of the tournament.

Tigres and River Plate will face on Wednesday night in Buenos Aires in the return game of Copa Libertadores final. If Tigres wins, this will be the first time a Mexican club becomes champion of this CONMEBOL tournament.

The match will be played at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires where only two Mexican teams have defeated the Argentine club.

America was the first Mexican team winning in Monumental Stadium. In 2002 River Plate and America faced each other in the tournament's group stage. Frankie Oviedo scored one goal and helped America win three points. Both teams qualified to the round of 16. Endi
