Thai reform council likely to vote on draft charter on Sept. 7

Xinhua, August 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thailand's National Reform Council (NRC) whip on Wednesday tentatively set September 7 as the date to vote on the draft constitution, whip secretary Alongkorn Ponlaboot said.

The date has yet to be approved by NRC President Thienchay Kiranandana, who is currently in hospital, Alongkorn said, adding that the vote could be cast on either September 5, September 6 or September 7.

The Constitution Drafting Committee is expected to submit the final draft of the charter to the NRC on August 22, and the NRC will have 15 days to consider it before voting.

If the draft is endorsed by the NRC, it will be put to a referendum, which has been tentatively scheduled by the Election Commission on January 10, 2016.

If the draft is voted down, a new constitution drafting body will have to be set up to draw up a fresh charter.

If the NRC rejects the draft constitution, a referendum could be delayed to July 2016, and as a result, a general election might not be held until April 2017, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea- ngam reportedly said earlier.

According to Alongkorn, the NRC will meet one day between August 17 and August 21 to discuss the charter referendum and whether to propose additional questions for the referendum. Endi
