1st LD: 2 dead, over 20 rescued as ferry carrying 200 capsizes in Kenya's Lake Victoria

Xinhua, August 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two people have been confirmed dead and over 20 rescued while many went missing after a ferry carrying 200 collided with a fishing boat early Wednesday in Lake Victoria in Western Kenya.

Homa Bay County Police Commander John Omusanga said two children have died in the incident that occurred at 2 a.m. local time (2300 GMT on Aug. 4) near Remba Island.

Omusanga said the ferry was on its way from Remba to Kiwa when the incident happened.

The Kenyan Red Cross is leading a search and rescue mission. Nyanza Regional Police Commander Willy Lugusa said the two children's bodies have been recovered and most of the survivors were rescued by fishermen in the waters.

"It is not clear how the accident occurred in the waters, given they are both supposed to have lights that can warn the other of the distance between them," he said.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing and the death toll is expected to rise as many remain missing. Endi
