UN humanitarian agency to provide Myanmar flood assistance

Xinhua, August 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Responding to Myanmar authorities request on Tuesday, UN and international humanitarian organizations will provide international flood assistance, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said during a press conference here.

Since July 30, Myanmar has suffered a significant expansion of monsoonal flood waters as Cyclone Komen made landfall in Bangladesh bringing strong winds and additional heavy rains to the country.

As of Aug. 3, the Myanmar government reported over 200,000 people had been affected and 39 people have been killed across the affected regions.

According to OCHA, these figures are likely to rise in the coming days as more areas become accessible and more information becomes available.

The UN agency said that initial assessments show that people urgently need food, shelter, water and sanitation support, and access to emergency healthcare.

"Across the affected areas, transport networks, power lines and communication infrastructure have been disrupted; and access to several areas is a major challenge," an OCHA spokesperson said. Endit
