Tokyo stocks end lower on concerns over U.S. economy

Tokyo stocks ended 0.14 percent lower Tuesday as concerns over U.S. economic outlook following soft manufacturing data offset domestic optimism on broadly upbeat corporate earnings by listed Japanese companies.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 27.75 points, from Monday to 20,520.36. In contrast, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 0.23 point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,659.83.

Major decliners included agriculture and fisheries, and trading companies, while utilities and pharmaceuticals led gainers.

The turnover was 2,869.37 billion yen (about 23.13 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
