Namibian boxer crowned Super Bantamweight World champion

Xinhua, August 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Namibian boxer Paulus "The Rock" Ambunda became the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Super Bantamweight World champion in Namibian capital Windhoek on Sunday.

Ambunda was crowned world champion for the second time in a different weight category, after a tough 12-round fight against Leandro Esperante of Argentina for the vacant title. He first became a World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Bantamweight champion in March 2013, but lost that title five months later.

Esperante came to the fight prepared and dominated the first five rounds as he brought the crowd in attendance at Ramatex to a standstill when his left hook downed Ambunda in round two.

After being counted out twice by referee Andile Matika of South Africa, Ambunda managed to beat the counts as the round came to an end.

He later put up a great fight in the third round, but Esperante managed to keep him under control, and after 12 rounds of great boxing it was left to the judges' score cards to decide the winner.

The judges scored the fight in a split decision, with two judges scoring in favour of Ambunda, while the remaining judge scored the fight in favour of Esperante.

The score read 114-133, 114-115, 115-113, with Ambunda scoring more from the two judges to be crowned the new IBO champion. Endi
