The ice-makers

china.org.cn / chinagate.cn, July 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Editor's note: The ice-making workshop on Jungong Road in eastern China's Shanghai Municipality serves as a major ice provider for the megacity. The workshop produces more than 300 tons of ice everyday in summer to guarantee the freshness of vegetables and seafood. The ice-making machines at the workshop have been running for over 30 years. In the workshop, the temperature under the ground is only -10 Celsius degree, while the temperature above is over 38 Celsius degree due to the insulating layer. Working here is no piece of cake. When transferring the ice (125 kilograms each) from the workshop to the container car, workers have to make it done within 20 minutes. Otherwise, the ice would stick to the ground or even melt. Over 20 workers take three shifts in turns to ensure that the city get ice 24/7.
