BiH entity lawmakers adopt new labor law amid protest

Xinhua, July 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

The upper house of parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) on Thursday adopted a new labor law while thousands of workers held protest outside the parliament building.

The passage of the law, part of a series of reforms demanded by the European Union (EU), was key to secure funds from the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It was expected to be approved by the lower house next week after it was adopted by the upper house.

Meanwhile, thousands of workers protested in front of the building and demanded their unions be involved in drafting the legislation before it was put to vote.

Many noted the law will make it easier for companies to dismiss their workers. Some workers threatened to break into the parliament building but were prevented by hundreds of special police officers.

The workers vowed to continue their protests on Friday. Endit
