Three Turkish security soldiers killed in PKK attack

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Three Turkish security forces soldiers were killed Thursday in an attack by militants from the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey, said a statement by the Turkish General Staff.

A group of Turkish military troops, accompanying soldiers back from their annual leave, were attacked by a group of PKK rebels in the province of Sirnak, the statement said.

The attack came amidst escalating tensions in Turkey as the PKK has staged several offenses against Turkish security forces, after the government's military operations targeted the PKK's posts both in Turkey and in northern Iraq.

In a separate incident, a Turkish police officer and a civilian were killed in an armed attack, with another civilian injured in the southeastern Diyarbakir province of Turkey Wednesday, and three Turkish soldiers were injured in clashes with PKK militants in the eastern Agri province.

The PKK, which has thus far claimed the lives of over 40,000 individuals, is firmly recognized as a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. Endit
