Nicaragua denies hiding of escaped drug lord El Chapo Guzman

Xinhua, July 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

The escaped Mexican drug kingpin, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, is not a fugitive in Nicaragua, despite certain recent media reports, said a military source Wednesday.

The head of the Nicaragua Army General Julio Aviles dismissed the idea of Guzman being in the Central American country after the drug lord escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico in early July.

Aviles made the remarks at a press conference Wednesday while announcing activities meant to mark the 36th anniversary of Nicaragua's armed forces.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped from a Mexican maximum security prison on July 11 through a 1.5-kilometer-long tunnel.

Earlier, Nicaragua's Vice President Omar Halleslevens also denied that the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel is hiding in the Central American country.

"Nicaragua is a true protective wall against international drug- trafficking and organized crime. Guzman 'would clash' against the country's security system," said Halleslevens.

The U.S. government is offering a reward of 5 million U.S. dollars for anyone with details leading ot the capture of Guzman. Endite
