Daley/Gallantree from Britain claim mixed team diving event in Kazan

Tom Daley/Rebecca Gallantree from Britain won the inaugural mixed team diving event at the FINA World Swimming Championships here on Wednesday.

Mixed team event requires each of the pair dived alternately three times with at least one dive each on the 3m springboard and 10m platform.

Daley, 2009 world champion in men's 10m platform and bronze medalist in 2012 London Olympic Games, showed perfect form in his favorite platform with a day-high 101.50 points for 626B and 99 points in 207B that helped the British divers on the top of the podium in 434.65.

Oleksandr Gorshkovozov/Lullia Prokopchuk of Ukraine came to second 426.45 and Xie Siyi/Chen Ruolin of China took the bronze 425.40. Nadezhda Bazhina/Victor Minibaev of Russia had to concede to a fourth place 418.50.

"We did not have any expectation about this competition because we know China is so strong in team event and also in platform. I said to Becky that it is still a dream to listen to the national anthem while being in the highest march of the podium. I have dreams about it and when it finally happens it's such an insane feeling," Daley said.

"The victory means a lot of sacrifice, a lot of training, a lot of early morning, lots of hamburgers not eaten, lots of French fries not eaten, lots of work hard," said the excited Daley.

Xie Siyi, world champion in the men's 1m springboard two days ago, blamed himself for losing the gold.

"I was asked to compete in this event just before the worlds and did not prepare well. I felt a bit nervous during the competition, especially on the springboard part since I just changed from a platform diver to a springboard one. I should take most of the responsibilities for the failure since I lost most of the points starting from the 301 and other dives," Xie said.

In the synchronized swimming solo free final, Natalia Ishchenko of Russia earned her 18th world champions after she stepped out of the sport to giving birth. Ishchenko collected 97,2333 points, ahead of China's Huang Xuechen 95.700 and Spain's Ona Carbonell 94.900.

"Each medal is precious for me. They are all unique, especially at the domestic world championships. Today I performed my routine better than in the preliminary. I tried to show off both artistic impression and technique as best I could," said the 29-year-old Ishchenko. Endit
