One policeman killed, 2 injured in Saudi shooting attack

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Saudi Arabia announced Wednesday that a Saudi policeman was killed and two others injured in a shooting directed against their patrol in Qatif in the Eastern Province, according to Al Arabiya news.

During 2015, 10 policemen died in Qatif, a Shiite-dominated area in the Sunni conservative state. Qatif has been witnessing violence and turmoil for years.

The Interior Ministry said Tuesday they arrested two suspects following the attack against the patrol in al-Jesh village in the district of Qatif.

Aside from the violence instigated by Shiite youth demanding additional rights in the country, Saudi Arabia has been fighting a war against extremists and members of the Islamic State (IS) focused on policemen and vital establishments.

IS declared responsibility for the deadly blasts against Shiite mosques in the Eastern province in May.

The Interior Ministry announced it disrupted a network linked to IS and arrested over 430 suspects July 18, averting fresh attacks on Shiite mosques and a diplomatic mission. Endit
