Israeli drone kills two Syrian fighters near Golan Heights

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Israeli drone targeted a vehicle of pro-government Syrian fighters in the countryside of the southern province of Qunaitera on Wednesday, killing two of them, a source and pro-government radio said.

The vehicle belongs to the National Defense Forces (NDF), a paramilitary force fighting alongside the Syrian army, the source said on condition of anonymity, adding that two NDF fighters were killed.

The drone struck the entrance of the Hadar town in the countryside of Qunaitera, near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The pro-government Sham FM radio and said the drone was armed, not only for reconnaissance proposes only.

The al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front and likeminded groups have been attempting to storm the predominantly Druze town of Hadar recently, amid reports that the Druze people there have armed themselves against any attack.

Still, the reason behind the Israeli drone attack is still murky. Israel has emerged as vague backer of the rebels in southern Syria, specifically in Qunaitera, bordering the Golan Heights.

Experts said Israel is trying to support the rebels in that area to create a buffer zone in order to protect its occupied territories against any spillover of the violence in Syria. Endit
