Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline attacked in SE Turkey

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline in the province of Sirnak in southeastern Turkey has been attacked, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said Wednesday.

The dubious attack took place Tuesday, 18 kilometers inside the Cizre town of Sirnak province close to Iraq, said Yildiz in a statement released by the Turkish Energy Ministry.

"We shut the oil valves to stop extra flow following the explosion," Yildiz said.

He said Turkey's energy system has recently suffered several attacks, adding that these terrorist attacks target the strategic position, stability and development of Turkey.

The Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline has a maximum operational capacity of 400,000 barrels per day. However, due to the attacks which frequently disrupt operations, actual flows are around 300,000 barrels per day.

The pipeline has a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels per day. Endit
