1st LD writethru: Muslim terrorist files fresh mercy plea day before hanging

Xinhua, July 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Muslim terrorist Yakub Memon on Wednesday filed a fresh mercy plea before Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, a day before his scheduled execution for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

The blasts killed 257 people.

President Mukherjee had rejected the 53-year-old's clemency petition last year, but Yakub's lawyer said that plea was filed by his family on his behalf.

The terrorist is scheduled to be hung Thursday at a prison in the western Indian state of Maharashtra's city of Nagpur.

He was sentenced to death after he was convicted for his role in the Mumbai terror attacks, along with 10 others. However, except for Yakub, the death sentences of others had been commuted to life in prison.

Yakub's brother Tiger Memon and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, the main accused in the case, are on the run since the serial blasts. Endi
