Explosion rocks Swedish city as violence surges

A grenade explosion rocked Malmo in the early hours on Sunday as violence escalated in the southern Swedish city.

Locals reported an explosion in a parking lot to the police, who found ten damaged cars and suspected a hand grenade had been detonated near a pick-up truck, news agency TT reported.

"It is a dangerous form of criminal activity that sooner or later will hurt a third person, as people throw grenades left and right," police spokesperson Stephan Soderblom told daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

Three people have died this year and have been injured in what police describe as acts of vengeance between a group of around 40 people. Police said the violence has picked up in recent months.

Several shootings and around 30 explosions, a third of them from hand grenades, have been reported this year.

"There are indications that a group of individuals have gotten hold of a larger consignment of hand grenades, likely from the Balkans," Soderblom said.

Malmo police have been granted additional, national resources in order to quell the violence.

"It's now about ensuring that the police can work and have these people arrested," said Home Affairs Minister Anders Ygeman. Endit
