Taliban militants on Sunday set free all 125 police personnel after one day of their capture in Tirgaran area of Wardoj district in Badakhshan province, governor of Wardoj district Dawlat Mohammad Khawar said. "Taliban militants set free all 125 police personnel on Sunday after overrunning military base in Tirgaran area of Wardoj district,"Khawar told Xinhua.

The armed militants after three days of fierce fighting captured the major military base in the strategically important Tirgaran valley on Saturday evening and arrested 125 police personnel.

However, the militants, according to Khawar, set them free Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, Badakhshan police chief General Baba Jan in talks with local media said that some local officials after reaching deal with Taliban handed over the control of military base to militants in Tirgaran area.

Badakhshan province with Faizabad as its capital 315 km northeast of Kabul has been the scene of increasing militancy over the past several months. Endi
