Broken chair to blame for German chancellor's fall during Bayreuth Festival: spokesman

Xinhua, July 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

A broken chair in the restaurant is to be blamed for the German chancellor's fall from a desk during a break on the opening evening of Bayreuth Festival on Saturday, according to Georg Streiter, deputy government spokesman.

Streiter denied a media report that Angela Merkel slipped off her chair to the floor as she suffered a dizzy spell in the opera house restaurant in Bayreuth, which was firstly reported by the German newspaper Bild.

According to the original report of Bild, it took the 61-year-old Chancellor two minutes to recover and she was helped by fellow guests.

Bild later updated its report, saying that Merkel was given a new chair after the incident and she was able to continue the break.

While leaving Merkel stated shortly that she likes the opera.

The annual event Bayreuth Festival kicked off on Saturday evening with "Tristan and Isolde". Merkel attends regularly with her husband Joachim Sauer. Endit
