1 killed, 5 wounded in Indian-controlled Kashmir grenade attack

A civilian was killed and five others including a paramilitary trooper were wounded Saturday in a grenade attack in Indian- controlled Kashmir, police said.

The grenade attack was carried out at Anantnag town, about 56 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Suspected militants this afternoon threw a grenade towards a patrol party of paramilitary troopers belonging to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in main market here. The grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the road wounding six people including a CRPF man," a senior police officer posted in town told Xinhua.

"However, of the wounded one succumbed while being taken to Srinagar for specialized treatment," he added. The slain civilian was an ice-cream vendor.

Pedestrians helped the wounded to reach a medical facility in the town.

"We received six people with splinter wounds today and all of them have been provided medical aid and critical ones were referred to Srinagar," a paramedic posted in Anantnag hospital said.

The attack created panic in the town.

Soon after the attack contingents of Indian police and paramilitary were rushed to the spot.

So far, no militant group has claimed responsibility of this attack.

Militants occasionally target Indian police and troopers in the region.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

The attack came a day after three grenades blasts in Srinagar targeted showrooms of two mobile phone companies and a communication tower. Endi
