Morocco arrests 2 suspected member of recently dismantled IS linked cell

Xinhua, July 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Morocco arrested two women suspected of being with a recently dismantled Islamic State affiliate (IS) cell that was plotting against the country, the interior ministry said in a statement late Friday.

The ministry noted that the women, who were arrested in the port city of Tangiers, had pledged allegiance to the militant group, had previously spent time in al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

According to the statement, the investigations revealed the gravity of the cell's destructive projects as its head, in coordination with other Moroccan field leaders affiliated with IS, was planning to name Morocco "Wilayat Al Maghrib" in conformity with IS expansionist strategy outside Iraq and Syria.

On Tuesday, the Moroccan authorities said eight people were arrested over alleged plots to carry out a series of terrorist operations against security officials and sensitive sites in the country.

Earlier in July, Morocco announced the dismantlement of two cells consisting of 17 people. They were suspected of spreading IS ideology, as well as recruiting Moroccans to join its ranks in Iraq and Syria. Enditem
