3 killed as earthquake strikes near Pakistan's capital Islamabad

Xinhua, July 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least three people including two women were killed when a 5.5-magnitude quake hit Pakistan's capital Islamabad and parts of the country's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday morning, local media and Met office said.

Express News said that the three people of a same family were killed when their house collapsed due to strong tremors in Abbottabad, a district located some 110 km north of the country's capital Islamabad.

The Met office said that the earthquake jolted the country at 01:59 a.m. (local time) and its focal depth was measured at 10 km.

The magnitude of the quake was determined at 23 km northeast of the capital in the Margalla hills, a hill range of the lesser Himalayas spreading at an area of 12,605 hectares.

The tremor caused panic among the people who rushed out of their houses in panic.

Pakistan, particularly its north and northwest areas, are located in one of the most earthquake prone zones of the world, with high vulnerability to earthquakes.

Earthquake activity in Pakistan is mainly concentrated in the northern and western sections of the country, along the boundary of the Indian plate and the Iranian and Afghan micro-plates. Endi
