2nd LD Writethru: 5-magnitude quake jolts Dodecanese islands: Greek seismologists

Xinhua, July 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 5-magnitude earthquake jolted on Friday the Dodecanese islands in eastern Aegean Sea, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.

No injuries or major material damage have been reported.

Earlier the day, the Euro Mediterranean Seismic Center (EMSC) had given a 5.2 measurement preliminary estimate for the same tremor, but Greek seismologists revised it downwards.

The quake's epicenter was monitored at about 44 km south of Kalymnos island and 29 km west of Nisyros island, at a distance of about 310 km southeast of Athens.

The depth of the tremor which was felt as far away as Crete island, was estimated at approximately 129 km in the sea area.

Seismic-prone Greece is often hit by quakes, but in most cases they cause no major damage. Endit
