China's bioindustry expands: official

Xinhua, July 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

China's bioindustry is booming, a senior official said Friday, citing the latest statistics.

China's bioindustry has maintained an annual growth of more than 20 percent, with last year's output value reaching 3.16 trillion yuan (510 billion U.S. dollars), Wan Gang, head of the Ministry of Science and Technology, said at the ongoing 2015 International Conference for Bioeconomy that opened Thursday.

"Life sciences and biotechnology are getting increasingly important in China's economic development," Wan said. "We will continue to support bioindustry by focusing on key technology and product development, pushing innovation and training more talents."

China will stick to opening-up and encourage Chinese companies and institutions to go abroad to improve, he added.

"We also encourage foreign companies to set up research institutions in China to enhance international cooperation in biotechnology," he said at the conference, which will conclude on Saturday.

China has stepped up efforts recently to boost the bioindustry and made a number of achievements, including the mass production of cancer medicine Chidamide and an artificial cornea. Endi
