Indian PM could face "human bomb" attack when he visits eastern state: report

Xinhua, July 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Indian intelligence agencies have warned of a possible "human bomb attack" on Prime Minister Narendra Modi similar to that on his predecessor Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, when Modi visits the eastern state Bihar this weekend, said local media.

Modi is scheduled to visit Patna, the state capital of Bihar, on Saturday and address a rally at Muzaffarpur district there.

"The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has alerted Bihar government and the Special Protection Group officials camping in the state to be on high alert for a possible human bomb attack against Modi during his visit to Patna and Muzaffarpur on Saturday," the Indo-Asian News Service quoted a top police official as saying in Patna.

Well trained women Maoists may be used as a human bomb to target the prime minister during the visit, the official was quoted as saying.

Intelligence reports said the suicide bomber may target Modi disguised as a mediaperson, police official, electrician, an organizer, caterer or laborer," said officials.

They were referring to the extreme left-wing Naxalite rebels who are active in Bihar, one of the poorest states of India.

During his election campaign two years ago, Modi's rally at Gandhi Maidan in central Patna was rocked by serial bomb blasts on Oct. 27, 2013, leaving five people dead and nearly 100 injured.

Indian police said Muslim militants were behind the attacks at that time. Endi
