Burkina Faso to mark 1st anniversary of Air Algeria crash

Xinhua, July 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Parents of victims of Air Algeria flight AH 5017 crash, in which all 116 people on board died on July 24, 2014, are set to mark the first anniversary of this tragedy on Friday in Ouagadougou, a source close to the parents of the victims told Xinhua on Thursday.

According to the program of the ceremony seen by Xinhua, both foreign and national delegations are expected to arrive in the Burkina Faso capital for the anniversary.

Friday's ceremony to pay tribute to the victims comes after Thursday's vigil night that saw political, religious and customary leaders meet to remember the victims.

Flight AH 5017 from Ouagadougou to Algeria, crashed a year ago in Northern Mali, about half an hour after taking off from Ouagadougou.

Those on board included 54 French nationals, 23 Burkinabes, eight Lebanese, six Algerians, nationals of other countries and the six Spanish crew members.

A few days after the crash, the black boxes were retrieved and sent to Paris to be analysed.

Investigators said the main cause of the accident was "non-activation of the anti-icing system of the engine sensor, yet the external temperature and the humid zone required its activation." Endit
