New vice president takes oaths in Maldives

Xinhua, July 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Maldives Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb was sworn in as the country's new vice president on Wednesday, a day after the former vice president Mohamed Jameel was sacked, local media reported.

Adheeb was sworn in before Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed at the president's office.

The Maldives parliament on Tuesday passed a no-confidence motion against Jameel and he was removed from his post, making him the first vice president to be sacked.

The parliament accused Jameel of treason and his "lack of action contribution" both during his tenure as vice president and home minister. Endi
