(Sports)Pakistan announces cricket team for Sri Lanka series

Xinhua, July 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistan on Wednesday announced its cricket team that will play upcoming Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka later this month, officials said.

Chief selector of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Haroon Rashid, said senior all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been retained as the captain of the side that will play two T20 matches against hosts Sri Lanka.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah, fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and pacer Sohail Tanvir have also been recalled to the squad for the series.

Left-handed aggressive fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who had got his hand during a test match against Sri Lanka last month, was named in the squad but in condition to clear a fitness test.

If Riaz failed the fitness test, uncapped young left-arm fast bowler Zia-ul-Haq will replace him.

"Riaz is expected to start bowling from July 24 after recovering from hand injury, under the supervision of coaches and would be included in the squad upon clearance that he is injury free and bowling to their satisfaction," Rashid said.

Zia was part of the Pakistan-A team that visited Sri Lanka in May this year and took six wickets in three games.

Rashid said the selectors had been monitoring Pakistan players and decided to pick Tanvir based on his performance and experience in the T20 format.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka will play their first T20 match on July 30 and second on August 1 at the same venue in Colombo. Endi
