French gov't announces support for livestock farmers

French government on Wednesday unveiled an emergency package of measures to support the domestic livestock sector as struggling livestock farmers protested low meat prices.
Besides announcing the measures, government spokesman and Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll also pledged to restructure farmers' debts and alleviate the charges by unfreezing 600 million euros (654 million U.S. dollars) in favor of farmers in difficult situation.
"The government's first priority is the recovery of trading rates and prices," Le Foll added after a weekly cabinet meeting.
To Manuel Valls, Prime Minister, the emergency package of 24 measures aimed at finding "a virtuous circle that allows to overcome the crisis."
The government's new measures came after the country's angry farmers denounced low margins squeezed by retailers, blocked with their tractors the roads in northwestern France, to force officials to take swift and concrete acts to improve their financial situation. Endit
