Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100GMT, July 22

Tokyo stocks fell 1.19 percent on Wednesday as declines on Wall Street overnight dampened sentiment,prompting some investors to lock in their gains after the Nikkei index rose for six straight trading days through Tuesday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 248.30 points, from Tuesday at 20,593.67.

The turnover was 2,368.91 billion yen (about 19.14 billion U.S. dollar).

BEIJING -- Chinese shares extended gains on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index climbing above the 4,000-point psychological mark.

The index edged up 0.21 percent to close at 4,026.05 points.

The smaller Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.76 percent to close at 13,416.54 points. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.50 percent to end at 2,897.37 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses grew slightly to around 1.28 trillion yuan (209.8 billion U.S. dollars) from 1.2 trillion the previous day.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks dropped 253.81 points, or 0.99 percent, to close on Wednesday at 25,282.62 points.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,177.6 and 25, 401.79. Turnover totaled 81.73 billion HK dollars (10.55 billion U. S. dollars).

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) slid 18. 89 points, or 0.91 percent, to 2,064.73 at the close. Trading volume stood at 1.15 billion shares worth 6.77 trillion won (5.87 billion U.S. dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market finished on Wednesday up 0.53 percent against the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 7.04 points to 1,332.99. A total of 1,001,564 shares worth about 7.06 billion Lao kip (about 857,000 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

HONG KONG -- Taiwan's share prices closed lower Wednesday with the weighted index down 87.26 points, or 0.96 percent, to close at 8,918.7, according to news reaching here from Taipei.

Turnover totaled 77.92 billion new Taiwan dollars (about 2.5 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.1 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 7.66 points to 7635.62. The all-share index went up by 2.78 points, or 0.05 percent, to 4358.5.

Trading volume reached 3.15 billion shares worth 7.55 billion pesos (166.7 million U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam,closed at 629.85 points on Wednesday, up 13.24 points, or 2.15 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 120.809 million shares worth 2.264 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (104.48 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 655.06 points, up 13.61 points, or 2.12 percent.

A total of 47.490 million shares worth 1.204 trillion VND (55. 57 million U.S. dollars) were traded on Wednesday.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 87 points on Wednesday, up 2.08 points, or 2.45 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 55.728 million shares worth 683.441 billion Vietnamese dong (31.64 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, an increase of 35.43 percent in volume and 34.73 percent in value against the previous trading session.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,729.53 down 6. 66 points or 0.39 percent, and the Emas was at 11,933.98 down 28. 73 points or 0.24 percent.

Turnover increased to 1.66 billion shares valued at 1.68 billion ringgit Malaysia (442.75 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.66 billion shares valued at 1.51 billion ringgit Malaysia ( 396.85 million U.S. dollars) on Tuesday.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 36.84 points, or 0.76 percent, to a level of 4,906.69 on Wednesday.

Some 220,144 transactions were booked, involving 3.79 billion shares worth 5.05 trillion rupiah (about 377.84 million U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 12.24 points, or 0.36 percent, to close at 3,359.17.

A total of 2.79 billion shares changed hands with turnover of 951.6 million Singapore dollars (697.9 million U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved up 0.40 points, or 0.03 percent to close at 1,447.84 points. Some 10.67 billion shares worth 39.97 billion baht (about 1.16 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian stocks advanced on Tuesday after overseas funds extended their monthly purchases of local shares.
