Curfew imposed in E. Indian city following communal violence

Indian police Wednesday imposed curfew in an eastern town after violence broke out between Hindu and Muslim communities there over the alleged harassment of a girl, said local media.

Jamshedpur in the eastern state of Jharkhand has seen the two communities clashing since Monday evening when a girl of one community was allegedly harassed by boys of another community. The incident took place near Gandhi Maidan area of city, said Indo- Asian News Service.

A mob burnt tires following which members of the two communities clashed. Police said both the communities resorted to violence at many places and burnt vehicles, according to the report.

More than 100 people have been arrested so far by police.

India has seen a rise of the incidents of communal violence in the first five months this year compared with the same period last year, according to official statistics. Endi
