If anyone still needs reminding of the dangers of publishing a comment on their social media account then the case of young Spanish footballer Julio Rey should serve as an example.
Spain has seen several cases this year of politicians who have had to face difficult questions over posts they have made on 'twitter' and 'facebook' indeed a recently elected member of the Madrid local authority had to resign after less than a day as 'Culture Secretary' after it was discovered he had made bad-taste jokes on twitter four years previously.
20-year-old Galician footballer, Julio, must have thought his career was about to take off when Deportivo la Coruna announced his signing on their official website.
The youngster had played in the Espanyol youth system and had the chance to move back 'home.'
Unfortunately for Julio, 'Twitter' has an infallible memory which can come and bite you when you least expect it.
Three years ago Julio, had posted a 'tweet' insulting both his new club and their Riazor Stadium and it didn' t take long for that tweet to surface and come to the attention of the club.
Julio cancelled his twitter account, but the damage had been done and on Monday Deportivo published a communique on their official website which read, "Real Club Deportivo.... has decided to not complete the agreement after analyzing various comments published by the player on his personal profile on social network sites some years ago."
"The club understands that a player deserves to wear its blue and white shirt if they are an example of sportsmanship, respect for rivals, compromise with the club and positive feelings for the club, its colors, its badge and the values the institution represents."
Deportivo have waved goodbye to a young footballer, while Julio now has time to reflect on the error of his ways ... and perhaps wonder if he could sign for Deportivo' s eternal rivals, Celta Vigo. Endi
