Former German international Piotr Trochowski joined Bundesliga side Augsburg on a free transfer, the "Fuggerstaedter" confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who played until August 2014 for Spanish outfit Sevilla, inked a one-year contract with an option to extend for another season.

"With the signing with Piotr Trochowski we do not only bolster our team but add more quality to our offence, which will help the team," Augsburg's head coach Markus Weinzierl said.

Trochowski knows the Bundesliga as he played six years, from 2005 until 2011, for Hamburg where he provided 20 goals and 32 assists in 180 appearances. The midfielder was also part of Germany's national squad until 2010. He scored two goals in 35 international caps.

"The last week, where I was able to train with the team, was extremely positive and boosted my desire to join Augsburg. Therefore I am happy that the transfer worked out and I get the chance to return into the Bundesliga," the new arrival told the club's official homepage.

Augsburg plays their first game of the season against Berlin on August 15. Endi
