Tokyo stocks open modestly higher on weaker yen, ahead of earnings

Xinhua, July 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early trading Tuesday as the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar boosted export-oriented issues, adding to anticipation of firm April-June quarterly earnings by listed companies due this week.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 110.53 points, or 0.54 percent, from Friday to 20,761.45. Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 8.61 points, or 0.52 percent, to 1,671. 55.

Gainers were led by shipping, air transport and securities. Endi
