At least eight people were killed late on Monday in Yemen's capital Sanaa when a car bomb went off near a house of a Shiite Houthi leader, sources told Xinhua.

The car bomb placed near the house of Houthi leader Abdul Karim al-Kuhlani in al-Jeraf quarter in northern Sanaa exploded when his convoy was coming out, killing al-Kuhlani and seven of his bodyguards, a security official said on condition of anonymity. (Yemen-Attack-Car Bomb)

WASHINGTON -- Cubans on Monday raised Cuba's national flag over the country's newly opened embassy in Washington D.C., the U.S. capital, as diplomatic relations between two nations were restored after more than half a century.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez attended the embassy reopening ceremony in Washington D.C. Crowds of people cheered as the Cuban national anthem played and Rodriguez hoisted the Cuban flag for the first time since 1961, when diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed. NICOSIA -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that there is currently an opportunity to solve the Cyprus problem which must not be squandered.

BRUSSELS -- European Union (EU) ministers on Monday failed to agree on a plan to relocate 40,000 refugees in Italy and Greece.

WASHINGTON -- Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), announced on Monday the appointment of Professor Maurice Obstfeld as the IMF's Economic Counselor and Director of the Research Department.
