Cuba raised its flag over its newly opened embassy here Monday as diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States were restored after half a century.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez attended the embassy reopening ceremony in the U.S. capital Washington D.C.

Full diplomatic ties between the United States and Cuba were restored at the stroke of midnight, as an agreement to resume normal relations took effect on July 20.

Earlier on Monday, the Cuban flag was also hoisted in the lobby of the State Department next to those of other countries that have established diplomatic relations with the United States.

Rodriguez will later meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and address reporters at a joint news conference. Kerry will travel to Havana in August to attend a flag-raising ceremony at the U.S. embassy there. Endi
