One killed, 3 injured after ancient tree collapses in China

Xinhua, July 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

One villager was crushed to death and another three were injured after a 420-year-old tree fell down in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local authorities said Friday.

The accident happened in a village of Sandu Township, Liujiang County around 3 p.m. on July 13, when the big tree suddenly collapsed and hit four villagers who were passing by.

One died in the hospital, another suffered from a bone fracture in one arm and the other two had minor skin injuries, according to the county government.

On July 8, the tree cracked and a large portion of it fell, damaging a house nearby. The township government claimed that it had set warning signs near the tree and arranged officials to patrol the area to prevent anyone from getting too close to it.

The collapse was due to age and insects, said the township government.

The county government has vowed to carry out a safety inspection of old trees across the township. Endi
