Rahul Gandhi attacks Indian PM over land acquisition bill

Xinhua, July 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's main opposition Congress party's second-in-command Rahul Gandhi Friday made a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Land Acquisition Bill.

Gandhi said that the Congress party would not let the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government to pass the bill in the Parliament

"We will not let the Land Acquisition Bill pass in Parliament. We will not let the government snatch even one inch of land (from farmers)," Gandhi said in the western state of Rajasthan's capital Jaipur.

Gandhi also said that Modi has forgotten farmers after becoming the prime minister.

"Now that he has become the prime minister, why should he be concerned about farmers? He had made several promises to them, but all empty ones," he told a gathering of his supporters.

Though the Indian government has passed the Land Acquisition Bill in its modified form through an executive order, it still needs to be passed by the Parliament within six months, otherwise it will lapse. Endi
